When you're traveling to a relatively unknown island, the hard part is knowing very little about the destination, at least initially. However, that's also the exciting part! After all, traveling to new places can offer a surprising blend of adventure and relaxation. But before you can book your trip, it would benefit you to plan accordingly and determine what you would like to get out of your island getaway. The destination, of course, depends on what you consider to be your dream vacation; if it's adventure and pure authenticity, the answer is easy:

Look up Roatan in TripAdvisor's discussion forum and you will invariably find someone asking for advice on whether it's better to stay in West End or West Bay. The answer, of course, depends on your point of view and what you're looking for in your next Roatan vacation. While both locations are on the Western end of the island, they are quite different.

Unquestionably the highest end resort on Roatan, Pristine Bay continues to develop and evolve. Located about mid-island, on Roatan's northern shore with beautiful sunset views over the Caribbean, this massive, three-phase project is remarkable not only for its signature Black Pearl golf course, but also for its continuity and momentum. Seemingly immune to the ebb and flow of the global economy, Pristine Bay development simply, impressively marches on.

It's a bird. It's a plane. It's an RC Drone with a Hero Pro HD Camera attached.
I had the pleasure this past Saturday of working with a young man from the Honduran mainland named Jose Servillon who shoots aerial footage for a variety of industries using an industrial strength RC helicopter.

If you are considering planning a vacation to Roatan but have a lot of questions and don't really know where to start, this post is for you.

A common site from the patios of our Coral Vista Roatan vacation rentals these days is someone paddling by on what appears to be a surfboard. Sometimes, in fact, there's a whole group of these paddlers. They come from the beach over by Sundowners and head out of Half Moon Bay around the point to the West.

Well... you did it!
You grew up, got a job, built a career, got married, had kids, raised a family, got them off into the world successfully, they had kids and here you are.
It's time for a vacation - a vacation together!

Pterois volitans... aka the Red Lionfish
The story is pretty well documented at this point. These beautiful creatures are native to the Indo-Pacific, but sometime in the early 1990s they were accidentally introduced to the Eastern Atlantic, likely around Florida. With no natural predators, plentiful food and warmer waters, their population has grown unchecked for two decades, and they are now found from the Atlantic coast off North Carolina to the Caribbean waters of Belize and Roatan.

I've always wanted to write that. There's something cool about pirates. They dress cool, and they talk cool (here's a quick lesson in pirate speak if you're interested). As hard as it is for me to admit, Johnny Depp probably had a lot to do with our current fascination with pirates. But other aspects of popular culture have helped too... like rum, for example.
