In a word, us. We happened. We came, we saw and we conquered. With our "conveniences", our vices and our money, we found paradise and very quickly started changing it. To be fair, we didn't try to or even necessarily want to, but we did.

Two years ago this month, I visited Roatan with my wife and four kids for the very first time. Like many first-time visitors, our main reason for coming was scuba diving. And like an increasing number of new visitors, we found out about Roatan from an episode of HGTV's Househunters International.

Pterois volitans... aka the Red Lionfish
The story is pretty well documented at this point. These beautiful creatures are native to the Indo-Pacific, but sometime in the early 1990s they were accidentally introduced to the Eastern Atlantic, likely around Florida. With no natural predators, plentiful food and warmer waters, their population has grown unchecked for two decades, and they are now found from the Atlantic coast off North Carolina to the Caribbean waters of Belize and Roatan.
