One of the inherent beauties of any Caribbean vacation is the chance to eschew the hours spent plugged-in, playing video games, watching television or staring at a computer screen. On Roatan, the huge number of available activities—and when we say "activities" we're also including chances to enjoy life's simple pleasures—can make a screen seem a bit foreign when you return home after your vacation.
To help you decide which opportunities to seek on your next visit to Roatan, we've organized our favorite vacation activities according to your group's personality.
For the adventurers
Get your adrenaline pumping by visiting one of more than 100 world-class dive sites surrounding the island. The crew at Native Sons, our favorite dive shop, is led by owners who serve on the board of the Roatan Marine Park and have a passion for conservation. On top of that, they provide PADI-certified diving instruction so that they can lead groups on environmentally friendly trips to view the natural and sunken wonders beneath the ocean's surface.
By land, soar above the jungle treetops courtesy of South Shore Zipline Adventures. Eleven steel suspension cables are set at various heights, allowing you to cruise safely through the leaves and land at 16 raised platforms that provide a chance for exceptional sightseeing.
For the relaxation-seekers
We'd be amiss if we didn't highlight two relaxation-focused excursions. The first is to take a water taxi and visit West Bay Beach, one of Central America's most prized shorelines. Relax on the white sand and take in the views of turquoise water, or rent a jet ski to skim the surface. On another day, play the award-winning Black Pearl golf course at the Pristine Bay resort. Designed by Pete Dye, the 18-hole course stretches across 7,200 scenic yards and has a par of 72.
For the animal lovers
Maya Key is more than a secluded space to study Mayan history, swim in a 70,000-gallon pool, snorkel along a pier and stroll along lush garden paths. The 11.5-acre private key also serves as a rescue hospital for the island's exotic animals. On any given day, you could come across jaguars, ocelots and monkeys along with birds such as toucans and parrots. The experienced staff also provides opportunities for interaction with sting rays, nurse sharks and sea lions.
For the whole family
Along with the beaching, fishing and snorkeling, one of our favorite family-friendly experiences is the Dolphin Beach Encounter at Anthony's Key Resort. Following an orientation at one of the resorts private keys, guests of all ages can swim alongside a family of bottlenose dolphins. While you interact with the marine mammals, the guide provides you with information about their anatomy and behavior. Before you leave the 30-minute encounter, you may even get a kiss from one of the animals!
