My last post on the state of Roatan health care and the incredible work being done by the people of Clinica Esperanza was a heavy topic, so let's follow it up with a deep and meaningful discussion of... what else - beer!

When we bought Coral Vista 1 early last year, Mary and I decided that we wanted to reinvest some of the rental proceeds in Roatan. So on our annual Roatan vacation last summer, we asked Mark Flanagan from Roatan Life Vacation Rentals, the company that manages our property and takes care of our guests, to take us around to some local charities so we could learn more about them. We wanted to understand what they did, how they worked and, importantly, we wanted to be comfortable that our donations would actually find their way to the people of Roatan.

Well... you did it!
You grew up, got a job, built a career, got married, had kids, raised a family, got them off into the world successfully, they had kids and here you are.
It's time for a vacation - a vacation together!

Pterois volitans... aka the Red Lionfish
The story is pretty well documented at this point. These beautiful creatures are native to the Indo-Pacific, but sometime in the early 1990s they were accidentally introduced to the Eastern Atlantic, likely around Florida. With no natural predators, plentiful food and warmer waters, their population has grown unchecked for two decades, and they are now found from the Atlantic coast off North Carolina to the Caribbean waters of Belize and Roatan.

Quick: What's more popular, a Roatan vacation rental or a brand new iPad?
I know - what a weird question. How do you begin to compare a vacation rental with a tablet computer? Well, on one level you obviously cannot. One is a piece of technology that you buy and use potentially every day for a long period of time. The other is an accommodation that you call home for a week and then leave. But even though they are so different, there is a way to get a broadly comparative sense of your satisfaction with each.

I've always wanted to write that. There's something cool about pirates. They dress cool, and they talk cool (here's a quick lesson in pirate speak if you're interested). As hard as it is for me to admit, Johnny Depp probably had a lot to do with our current fascination with pirates. But other aspects of popular culture have helped too... like rum, for example.

"You stand where you sit."
Somebody famous said that (or must have). By the way, please tell me if you know who it was...

Roatan Vacation Rental Restaurants: West End
The great thing about vacation rentals is the ability to cook your own meals and dine in. You can save money, eat what you want and when you want, etc. The great thing about our Roatan vacation rentals is that you can do all that, AND, because of their location in the heart of West End Village, you can also dine out at an amazing variety of excellent restaurants all within walking distance of your villa.

Private, shared space...
A place to hang out together with family or friends, listen to music (or not), have a conversation (or not), play some cards (or not)... it's all up to you. And it's one of the big advantages vacation rentals have over a resort or hotel.

One of the best parts of a Roatan vacation rental is the ability to cook and dine inside or out whenever you want for little more than the price of groceries. In fact, in a recent study*, access to full kitchen facilities was cited by over 80% of respondents as a reason they choose vacation rentals over traditional hotels or resorts. It's easy to see why. With access to a "real" kitchen, vacation home renters can save significant amounts of money on food and eat what they want (often healthier), when they want (sometimes not so healthy) versus dining out every meal.
