There's a lot to love about owning a vacation home on Roatan. We are so fortunate to have a place we can go that's on a beach overlooking the Caribbean in a cool little town - even if we only get there once a year for a week. The rest of the time, we get to share it with people from all over the world who visit Roatan to relax, escape and explore. That is what's so great about owning a vacation home on Roatan.

When Mary and I purchased our Roatan vacation rental home in 2012, we knew we were going to have to put some money into it. It was clear from the home inspection that the villa had been very heavily used over the previous few years and needed just a little TLC (and a lot of upgrades, updates and improvements). What follows are the steps we took to give Coral Vista 1 an Extreme Makeover.

I was driving to our West End Roatan vacation rental house a few weeks ago when I suddenly noticed how quiet it was. So I decided to try the radio in my rental car, and much to my surprise, I was greeted by crystal clear sound and some great tunes. The station was 101.1 FM, Roatan Radio.

A Pristine Bay Roatan Resort Vacation is Not For You If...
1. You Want Crowds
Pristine Bay Roatan Resort is beautiful... and new... and not quite finished. As a result, there aren't a ton of people there... yet. So, if you want to enjoy a week of peace and solitude while living in luxurious surroundings, check it out. If, on the other hand, you enjoy meeting new people sitting on the beach side by side in a long row of beach chairs, Pristine Bay may not be for you.

We dream about them. We plan them, and then we anticipate them. We take them, and when we return from them, nine times out of ten, we feel like we need a vacation from our vacation.

A West Bay Roatan Vacation Rental is Not For You If...
1. You Want Total Peace and Quiet
West Bay is a classic Caribbean strip of beach. Turquoise waters. Sugar-white sand. Soothing trade winds...
... and then there is the armada of beach chairs, hundreds of people competing for space at the pool or on the beach, lines for food, etc.

I never stopped to think much about the fact that Easter Sunday comes on very different dates each year... until I became the owner of a Roatan vacation rental.

Two years ago this month, I visited Roatan with my wife and four kids for the very first time. Like many first-time visitors, our main reason for coming was scuba diving. And like an increasing number of new visitors, we found out about Roatan from an episode of HGTV's Househunters International.

Looking for a Kids' Activity on Your Roatan Vacation?
It's the tropical analog to ski school: what to do with the little ones while mom and dad go diving every day for a week... except it far surpasses anything a ski school could offer.

A common site from the patios of our Coral Vista Roatan vacation rentals these days is someone paddling by on what appears to be a surfboard. Sometimes, in fact, there's a whole group of these paddlers. They come from the beach over by Sundowners and head out of Half Moon Bay around the point to the West.
