If you live on the West coast of the United States or Canada, thoughts of a tropical vacation typically run to places like Hawaii or the Mexican riviera. In the Eastern half of the continent, it's more likely to be the Florida Keys or the Eastern Caribbean. And this all makes sense given similarity of time zones and ease of travel. As a result, tropical vacation destinations from the Bahamas to Hawaii get a lot of press... and a lot of visitors. If you've done these places and/or just want to try something a little off the beaten path, consider the many islands of the Western Caribbean.

Hotels are so last century.
For your next Roatan vacation, you have to look into renting a house on the beach. With major advances in vacation rental marketing, management and guest services, it has become every bit as easy to rent a whole house as it is to rent a single room, and you will be surprised at how affordable it can be.
But by far, the biggest benefit of renting a house versus a hotel room is what it will do for your stress level. With better locations, views, amenities, privacy and convenience, renting a house on the beach is the best way to enjoy your hard-earned vacation. The reason is simple: it's your home for a week (or two), not a room in someone else's. You can do what you want to do, when you want to do it. You can make yourself comfortable.

Yes, Honduras can be a dangerous place. In June 2014, the U.S. State Department warned travelers that the "level of crime and violence in Honduras remains critically high." However, as Roatan is one of Honduras's Bay Islands, it is physically and culturally distinct from the mainland. Because of this, the safety issues of the Honduran major cities are not nearly as prevalent on Roatan. Nonetheless, anyone traveling in unfamiliar areas needs to be mindful of safety concerns, no matter the location. With that in mind, we've assembled some helpful guidelines.

Roatan diving is world famous - and rightly so. From (relatively) frequent whale shark sightings to the Cordelia Banks to the world's second largest barrier reef just minutes off shore, diving off Roatan is truly amazing. Not surprisingly, world-class diving coupled with a growing number of annual visitors has given rise to a dizzying number of Roatan dive shops. As a result, we're often asked where to go for Roatan diving. There are two ways to answer this question: who to dive with, and what sites to visit. Let's take each one in order.

Unquestionably the highest end resort on Roatan, Pristine Bay continues to develop and evolve. Located about mid-island, on Roatan's northern shore with beautiful sunset views over the Caribbean, this massive, three-phase project is remarkable not only for its signature Black Pearl golf course, but also for its continuity and momentum. Seemingly immune to the ebb and flow of the global economy, Pristine Bay development simply, impressively marches on.
