One of the most appealing aspects of a Roatan vacation rental is the gourmet kitchen—whether you have a passion for whipping up a family-style dinner or you're looking forward to saving money and not eating out every meal, there's no denying the appeal of an open kitchen. In fact, according to the MMGY Global/Harrison Group 2012 Portrait of American Travelers, more than 80 percent of respondents listed access to full-kitchen facilities as the reason why they choose vacation rentals over traditional hotels or resorts. This is most likely because having access to a kitchen—especially when you're vacationing with friends or family—provides you with an opportunity to save a significant amount of money.
But with access to a real kitchen comes the inevitable questions: Where can I get groceries on Roatan? Will I need a car to go grocery shopping? What type of food will I find on the island?
Enjoy the flavors of Caribbean cuisine—all in the convenience of your private accommodations
There are two major grocery stores, Plaza Mar and Eldons, on the road from the airport to West End, where you will find a variety of your favorite brands. Fortunately, you won't need to rent a car to go to the grocery store, as long as you can request a ride from the local taxi service. Alternatively, check to see if concierge service is available on your stay. In many cases, the service will stock your fridge before arrival per your request for the cost of the grocery trip. A fuel charge may be added to that amenity. There are also a couple of small convenience stores in the West End for staple or last-minute items. And there are trucks located along Half Moon Bay that offer fresh produce and seafood for your convenience.
Dining in on your Roatan vacation, without lifting a finger
While it's great to have your own gourmet kitchen and fresh produce trucks coming to your doorstep—you are, after all, on vacation. So we highly recommend that for at least one evening you consider hiring a private chef to cater to you. For a reasonable fee, plus the cost of food and gratuity, a private chef can take care of the grocery shopping and prepare a multi-course meal inspired by local island cuisine. Whether you prefer a sit-down meal, or your family enjoys a buffet style dinner, you needn't lift a finger.
