A West Bay Roatan Vacation Rental is Not For You If...
1. You Want Total Peace and Quiet
West Bay is a classic Caribbean strip of beach. Turquoise waters. Sugar-white sand. Soothing trade winds...
... and then there is the armada of beach chairs, hundreds of people competing for space at the pool or on the beach, lines for food, etc.
If you have seen one of these set-ups, you have seen them all - developers buy up the beach-front, build hotels back from the beach so that every room has a sliver of a view, and put some form of restaurant or bar down by the water. So, as you stroll the beach, you pass from one hotel's slice of waterfront to another's, winding your way between their guest's beach chairs and listening to their bar's music fight with the next bar's music... you get the picture.
2. You Want Your Roatan Vacation Rental To Be On The Water
If you believe, like many, that the point of vacationing on a Caribbean island is to actually stay in a place right on the Caribbean - not on a hill where you can see it in the distance; not in a condo where if you lean out over your balcony you can see a sliver of the water; not beach "access"; not "a mere five minute walk" to the beach - we're talking really on the water. That is to say: wake up, grab a coffee, and drink it while sitting on your patio looking directly out on the Caribbean. Then a Roatan vacation in West Bay may not be for you, beacuse unless you are one of the lucky few who are willing to spend big money to rent the very few, true beachfront condos that are attached to the "ends" of the hotels on West Bay beach - you are out of luck. With rare exception, your options are essentially the condos in the resorts (that are well off the beach) or private homes that are up on the hills behind the resorts.
3. You're Trying to Avoid the Cruise Ship Crowd
It is true that West Bay Beach is one of the nicest beaches on Roatan. And this is, of course, what the thousands of weekly cruise ship visitors are told as well. As these day-trip visitors plan their Roatan itinerary, many opt for a day at the beach - guess which one? So on top of the hundreds of people packed into the hotels/"resorts", during most week-days, you can expect a fair influx of Cruisers as well. Even though the cruise ship terminals are a reasonable distance from the Western part of the island, you will not avoid them by staying in West Bay. If you are trying to dodge the crowds, a Roatan vacation in West Bay may not be for you.
4. You Don't Want to Be Hustled on the Beach
Need a new pair of knock-off sunglasses? How about a boot-legged DVD of Iron Man 2? Banana donut? Hand-made jewlery? If so, lounge on West Bay beach for a while. It is likely you will be offered all of these items and others. Not in a rude way. And not for a bad reason. People without much of what you are I would consider the basics are trying to make a living. Fair enough. But if you don't like turning folks down with a quiet "No, thanks" several times a day while on your vacation, a Roatan vacation in West Bay may not be for you.
5. You Don't Want To Be Surrounded by Tourists
Some vacationers like to meet the folks who live and work where they vacation and get a sense for what it's like to call a Caribbean island "home". It turns out that very few of these people - the ones who live and work on Roatan, especially expats - live or hang out in West Bay. West Bay is a toursit destination - full stop. Unlike West End, which is a neighborhood and working village, West Bay exists for one reason - the beach and the resorts that are built on it. So if you like to hang out with a bunch of folks who are like you, from (roughly) where you are from, all of whom are there for the same reason you are - definitely look into West Bay. Otherwise, a Roatan vacation in West Bay is probably not for you.
What are the other Roatan vacation rental options?
- If you want a high-end, private, gated resort vibe - Pristine Bay is world-class.
- If you want recluse-like seclusion in more rustic accomodations, take a look at vacation rentals on the Eastern half of the island on sites like VRBO and Homeaway.
- If you want to stay where you play with walking-distance activities, restaurants and night life, West End is the only game in town.
Even though it is small and still developing, Roatan has a wide variety of options to fit most vacation tastes. Give us a call or CLICK HERE and we would be glad to help you decide which location is right for you.
