A common site from the patios of our Coral Vista Roatan vacation rentals these days is someone paddling by on what appears to be a surfboard. Sometimes, in fact, there's a whole group of these paddlers. They come from the beach over by Sundowners and head out of Half Moon Bay around the point to the West.
A few hours later, they reappear and paddle back to where they started. At first, we thought it was some crazy water-borne conga line, but it turned out to be the fastest growing recreational sport in North America: Stand Up Paddle boarding, or SUP.
An Overnight Success - 50 Years in the Making
According to the source of all knowledge, Wikipedia, Stand Up Paddle boarding (also called stand up paddle surfing) originated in the 1960s as a way for surfing instructors to get themselves positioned for photos. The growth in its popularity has been attributed to a number of factors including the relative ease with which beginners can get started with the activity. An hour of training or less is all that's required for most moderately-athletic individuals to feel comfortable on the board.
Paddleboarding offers an amazing full body workout and is a favorite cross-training activity for skiers, snowboarders and other athletes. Since you're standing at your full height, you'll enjoy excellent views of everything from sea creatures to what's on the horizon. Supporters claim that it's almost like walking on water.
New custom SUP board prices range from US$600 to US$1,500, and most use glass-reinforced plastic construction using polyester or epoxy resin that is compatible with the polyurethane or expanded polystyrene foam used in the core. The outdoor equipment and clothing retailer, REI, has identified stand up paddleboards as one of their fastest growing product categories.
Learn SUP on Your Roatan Vacation
Without a doubt, one of the great advantages of staying at Coral Vista Villas is proximity to West End Village and all the things it offers. In recognition of this growing SUP trend, one of the newer places in West End is Steve's Paddle Shack next to Sundowners Beach Bar on Half Moon Bay Beach. They are "a Stand Up Paddleboard company that specializes in rentals and water excursions for cruise ship passengers and tourists looking to enjoy the water".
At the Paddle Shack, you can rent a board, get a lesson and/or go on a tour. Steve's does a two hour tour from West End to West Bay and back, and they also do a beautiful sunset tour from the mouth of Half Moon Bay in the evening. It's a great way to enjoy Roatan, while getting in a solid core and aerobic work out. And it's literally just a short walk down the beach from the Coral Vista Roatan vacation rentals.
