If you've read a few of our blogs you know we think Vacation rentals rock! You also know that Roatan is a hidden gem in the Western Caribbean, and that West End Village is the coolest place on Roatan. So if we believe all of that, why are we saying this?
5 Reasons You'll Hate a West End Roatan Vacation Rental
1. You Want Total Peace and Quiet
West End is a vibrant, working, Caribbean beach village. It's not a gated resort. It's not a strip of beach with a bunch of hotels on it. It's not a house in the woods. West End has energy and options. It has just about every kind of food and cuisine you can imagine. It has music - live and recorded - and televised soccer games and yes, even televised hockey games (if you like the Leafs...). It has local residents and tourists, kids who go to school and kids on break from school - and they both play in the water on Half Moon Bay beach. It has cats and dogs, and it has hens and roosters. They are all part of the scene that is West End, and they all contribute to an environment that produces a unique and authentic vacation experience. That experience sometimes comes at the expense of total peace and quiet.
So, if the driving factor behind your Roatan vacation is silence and solitude, stay elsewhere on the island and visit West End. You will be happier.
2. You Want To Park Your Rental Car Next To Your Beach House
The road in West End runs along the water - from Half Moon Bay down the coast toward West Bay. It separates almost everything from the water - except the Coral Vista Roatan vacation rental homes on the point in the center of the picture above. These four-bedroom, luxury villas are right on the water and one is even right on the beach, but you cannot reach them with a car. You have to park by the road and walk across a section of Half Moon Bay beach to get there. It's the price of waterfront, beachfront luxury in West End, and it saves you the cost of a rental car and the hassle of finding parking.
But, if you must have a rental car and must be able to park in a driveway next to your beachfront vacation rental, stay elsewhere on the island and visit West End. You will be happier.
3. You Need A Perfectly Manicured Beach
Half Moon Bay Beach isn't manicured. It's lived on. It's the people's beach - whomever the people happen to be that day: locals, tourists on vacation, cruise ship day trippers, etc. There is white sand and there is the same turquoise water found at all the other beaches in the Caribbean, but it doesn't get raked every day, there is turtle grass close to shore, and boats (dive, fishing, sight seeing) come in and out of the Bay all day long. Our kids love it. Some adults do not. They prefer the beaches that aren't lived on - the ones that are constantly groomed and protected for their visit.
So, if you want to stay on a perfectly manicured beach, try elsewhere on the island and visit West End for the restuarants, bars and shops. You will be happier.
4. You Like to Go To The Same Restaurant Every Night
You can walk out your door in West End and get world-class Indian food, great Thai food, American tapas, or Argentian food, Italian cuisine, bar food and burgers, street tacos, 11 different types of chicken dishes and, of course, great island cuisine featuring local, fresh-caught seafood. Most other places on the island don't have three different restaurants within walking distance while West End has three different noodle shops.
So, if you want to get on a first-name basis with the hostess at the hotel restaurant and try just about everything on that menu over your vacation, stay away from West End. You can avoid the confusing array of food options within walking distance and be much happier.
5. You Don't Want To Mingle With... "Locals"
Some folks like to get away from everything on vacation, including other humans. There are Roatan vacation rental options for that. Some like to hang out with folks from their part of the world who are on vacation, too (and race them for the scarce beach or pool chairs in the morning). There are definitely Roatan vacation options for that as well. Some vacationers actually like to meet the folks who live and work where they vacation, and get a sense for what it's like to call a Caribbean island "home". It turns out that a lot of those people - the ones who live and work on Roatan, especially expats - live around and hang out in West End... and every one of them has a story, a very interesting story, of how they came to be sitting across from you having a drink on an island in the Western Caribbean.
But, if you don't want to mingle with those pesky "locals", stay elsewhere on the island. You will be much happier.
On the other hand...
If you are that rare breed of traveler who can
- endure the sounds of a live band over the water and the odd rooster crow in the morning and
- handle the walk to the store for some juice and eggs to cook in your vacation rental kitchen before you
- hang out on the people's beach for a while and
- choose which happy hour and restuarant to try that night where you will
- meet some local folks and share laughs and stories
then stay with us at Coral Vista Roatan vacation rentals. You will be happier!
