Roatan Vacation Checklist
- Undiscovered Caribbean island (relatively speaking). Check!
- Ideal neighborhood to stay in and explore said island. Check!
- Place to sleep…? Excellent question (I'm so glad you asked).
So you're thinking about Roatan for your Caribbean vacation… and you've determined that West End is the where you want to stay. The only thing left is the actual lodging. Well, you're in luck, because West End has a wide range of accommodations that will fit almost any taste and any budget. From budget hotels to oceanfront resorts to luxury beachfront villa rentals, there is truly something for everyone right where the action is on Roatan.
West End Lodging Options
Trip Advisor lists 7 hotels, 10 B&Bs and 11 Vacation Rentals in West End. Vacation Rental by Owner lists 26 West End properties. Most are very highly rated. In full disclosure, together with my wife, I am the owner of one such property: a four bedroom, four bathroom vacation home (villa) on Half Moon Bay beach. It is part of a five home "development" on a peninsula that separates Half Moon Bay from the rest of the West End oceanfront. We stayed in one of these homes in March of 2011 and quite literally loved it so much, we bought it.
But this post isn't about our villa, it's about all the lodging options West End has to offer. Whether you are flying solo/diving with a buddy on a budget (try Hotel Chillies for as little as $10/night), or doing the honeymoon or family thing and looking for a little bit more of a resort/hotel feel (try Cocolobo for under $100/night), or reconnecting with friends or family on a special group get away (try any of the Coral Vista properties, where we bought our home, for around $200/night/bedroom), it is this variety of accommodation coupled with the energy/atmosphere of the village that make Roatan's West End such a special place to vacation.
What are Your Roatan Vacation Goals?
There are a lot of reasons to take a vacation, from the three "R"s to the three "E"s: Relax, Renew, Reconnect; Escape, Explore, Experience. Unfortunately, we don't always (often?) return from our vacations feeling like we've checked many of these boxes. Without a doubt, they key to achieving these goals is the softer stuff - attitude, mental state, etc. That's the subject of a future post (or two…). But it's almost equally important to get the foundation of the vacation right: the hard stuff - the "where" and "when". And all that takes is a little self-awareness and a little advanced planning.
Be honest about what kind of vacation you want to have. Is it the "I want to dive until the island is out of Sudafed!" vacation, or the "I want to break out the rum and break in the hammock" vacation, or perhaps the "I just want to spend some truly quality time with family/friends" vacation. Then, check out all the amazing lodging options in West End. I can almost guarantee you, one is perfect for you.
