What is the Best Roatan Resort?
Picking the best Roatan resort is a subjective process. It depends on the way you evaluate resorts along five dimensions:
- Location (where the resort is physically sited),
- Accommodations (the nature and quality of the rooms/suites/condos/villas),
- Amenities (the range and caliber of the extras offered on site),
- Service (the quality of the personal attention and care provided),
- Value (the overall assessment of "bang for the buck")
In the previous four posts in this series, we have covered each of the first four topics. You can refer to them here:
Which leaves us with, in many ways, the ultimate topic... Value. Which Roatan resort is best in terms of "bang for the buck"?
Assessing Value at Roatan's Resorts
Like the other four categories, determining resort value is subjective. A good value to one group might mean finding the lowest possible price. To another, it might mean getting a great "deal". And that - getting a great deal - is a very subjective thing. It's all relative to the experience you want, and it's all about perception. For example, if you really want an oceanfront property, a much cheaper resort without oceanfront rooms is irrelevant to you. It's not a better "Value" for you.
Within the range of resorts that have what you want, though, value largely comes down to price. If you think a night's stay is "worth" $1,000 and you get it for $500, you're inclined to think it's a heckuva deal. But what makes you think that night is worth $1,000 to begin with? Well, that's where marketing comes in. Welcome to the world of fictitious list prices, "all-inclusive" packages and "special" discounts.
List Prices, All-Inclusives and Specials, Oh My...
Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, your journey to finding the perfect Roatan vacation value can be quite an adventure. That's because some resorts publish absolutely fictitious list prices and then offer massive discounts to create the perception of savings. It's an old-school sales tactic that works for some, but seems to be increasingly out of fashion in most modern markets where the Internet has become the great price leveler.
Then there is the venerable "all-inclusive". Popularized by Club Med decades ago, the idea here is to create the perception of value by charging a single price for lodging, food, beverages and certain amenities. In truth, the benefit of all-inclusive pricing is convenience, not value, and for some, the simplicity of vacation budgeting is worth it. The downside, of course, is value and flexibility. You have to do everything with/at the resort, or it costs extra. And the fact of the matter is that food, beverage and lodging services cost every Roatan resort roughly the same amount, so assuming they all target the same profit margin, you aren't really saving any money - just constraining your options.
Finally, there is the good, old-fashioned special. Provided these specials are not related to the two categories above, these are often the real deal. Why do they happen? There is only one reason: occupancy isn't where the owner/operator wants it and time is running out. Resort weeks are like airplane seats. When the plane takes off, that empty seat is a loss. Similarly, when a Saturday comes and goes with no-one in a room/condo/villa, it's all cost and no revenue. So, what does the resort owner do? They discount the price with a special deal to fill the week. These are usually real, great values, and if your travel plans are flexible, you can save a lot of money versus booking way in advance. The downside? The property you want may not be available last minute.
