Choosing the best Roatan resort for your next vacation is all about "fit", and it isn't easy. At first blush, they all sound the same. But when you learn a little bit more about them, you find some very significant differences. These differences can make or break your Roatan vacation experience.
We evaluate resorts on Roatan against five criteria:
- Location (where the resort is physically sited),
- Accommodations (the nature and quality of the rooms/suites/condos/villas),
- Amenities (the range and caliber of the extras offered on site),
- Service (the quality of the personal attention and care provided),
- Value (the overall assessment of "bang for the buck")
We wrote about Roatan resort location options in Part 1 of this series and then tackled the topic of actual accommodations in Part 2 of the series. Most recently, in Part 3 of this series, we posted an article about the various amenities at the resorts Roatan offers.
After covering location, accommodation and amenities, there is not much more to write about the hard stuff - the physical aspects of a resort. So, for the final two posts in this series, we're turning our attention to the softer stuff: service and value. And just like the first three criteria, determining the best resort is a personal decision. So...
What Level of Service Do You Expect?
You will find almost everyone you encounter in Roatan's resort community to be friendly and helpful. One of the truly endearing and unfortunately unique aspects of this largely undiscovered Caribbean island is that it's not overdeveloped or jaded by tourism. In fact, there seems to still be a genuine gratitude for the role of tourists in the island's developing economy. So, if your definition of service is good, old-fashioned "being nice", you won't be disappointed at any resort Roatan has.
Above this foundation of friendliness and helpfulness, you will find the usual "Goldilocks" approach to service levels:
- bare bones (baby bear),
- over the top (papa bear), and
- middle of the road (mama bear).
What kind of Goldilocks are you? Which one do you think is "just right"? Before you answer, let's describe each one a bit further.
Bare Bones Service
Some Roatan resorts give you a room. That's pretty much it. You do the rest. That is not to say they are not friendly and helpful, but rather that they cater to the traveler who doesn't want or need a lot of hand-holding or extras that raise their costs and, hence, their prices. Many of these budget or bare-bones places have roots in the days of Roatan as a little-known, remote diving mecca when it took planes, ferries and buses to get here and backpacks carried everything you needed.
Over The Top Service
On the other end of the spectrum, there are resorts on Roatan that employ people to personally wait on you at your shaded beach chair on their private beach where you can enjoy free WiFi (if you somehow need it...) and valet services for your scuba gear. While there are not yet any Ritz Carltons or Four Seasons on Roatan, you can find this kind of service (albeit on island time) at a couple of the newer places like Pristine Bay Residences and Las Verandas.
"Mama Bear" Service
There's a lot of room for service levels between these two extremes, and it's fair to say most Roatan resorts fall into this category. Whether that's just right for you depends on your personal tastes and expectations. But remember, most Roatan vacation rental homes also fall into this category. That's because most of these homes are professionally managed by local vacation rental management companies such as Roatan Life Vacation Rentals. Through these local property management companies, private owners are able to offer their guests a very high level of personal service, even though they are not staying in a classic "resort". So, as you research Roatan resorts, definitely investigate some of the private vacation homes like Coral Vista Villas in West End.
