From Wikipedia: A resort is a place used for relaxation or recreation, attracting visitors for vacations and/or tourism.
How Do You Define Recreation and Relaxation?
Choosing the best resorts in Roatan is a personal decision. If a resort perfectly "fits" your definition of relaxation or recreation, it's the best for you. So how do you assess "fit"? We think there are five major criteria to consider when evaluating Roatan resorts:
- Location (where the resort is physically sited),
- Accommodations (the nature and quality of the rooms/suites/condos/villas),
- Amenities (the range and caliber of the extras offered on site),
- Service (the quality of the personal attention and care provided),
- Value (the overall assessment of "bang for the buck")
We wrote about Roatan resort location options in Part 1 of this series and then tackled the topic of actual accommodations in Part 2 of the series. The bottom line from these two posts: think hard about the kind of vacation experience you want. What do you want your place to be like (inside): decor, furnishings, creature comforts? What do you want to be outside your door: visible from your place, walking distance from your place, driving distance from your place? If you can envision and describe what you want, Roatan can provide it. But enough about the "where", let's talk about the "what" of your Roatan vacation.
Roatan Resort Amenities
It's not much of a stretch to say you can get anything you might want at a Roatan resort. But you need to decide what amenities you really want as not every resort offers every amenity. Let's start with some popular ones:
- airport transfers
- on-site dive shop
- room service
- daily maid/cleaning
- high-speed Internet/Free WiFi
Let's stop on that last one for a second. You can get concierge services at every resort on Roatan. Some resorts provide them "in house", and a handful of third-party services have sprung up to support visitors who want the experience and insight of a concierge but aren't staying at a resort that offers one.
All of these concierges services offer the usual suspects: making restaurant recommendations and reservations (to the extent they are needed, which is only at a few places), arranging charters (dive, fishing) and all forms of island tours, as well as planning activities such as zip lining and visits to attractions. Some concierge services go even further to include stocking the refrigerator to your specifications and/or arranging for a private chef to prepare a meal for you (if your accommodation has a kitchen).
Expanding the Definition of Resorts on Roatan
This brings us to an important point. With concierge services available to help you plan and execute the vacation you envision no matter where you're staying, even individual Roatan vacation rentals should be considered resorts and factored into your research.
Take Coral Vista Villas in West End, for example. These five villas are all located next to one another on a very unique piece of land that juts out into the Caribbean from the heart of West End. They are individually owned and not part of any bigger brand or property. Yet, when you book a week at any of these villas, you are met at the airport, escorted to the property, helped with your luggage, provided with a local cell phone programmed to call your concierge and given a range of services (before arrival) to choose from (including private chef, etc.) during your stay.
In addition, the villas themselves have free, high-speed Internet and WiFi as well as maid service (weekly for free, daily for fee). And lastly, when you step out of the door of the villas, you are literally steps away from multiple (competing, not captive) dive shops, stores, restaurants and bars. To many guests, it is literally the best combination of a classic resort and a vacation rental.
So which Roatan Resort amenities do you want?
What's your must-have list, and what's your nice-to-have list? If you have narrowed down where you want to stay on the island and defined the ideal type of accommodation for your visit, all that really remains is running down the list of amenities you expect and determining which of your options provide them. That can take a bit of time on the Internet. Alternatively, give us a shout and we would be happy to speed up the process.
